Esoterica aims to capture something hidden. A kernel of knowledge. A overlooked insight. A secret.
In our fiction and nonfiction, we strive to learn things we don’t know. To see the hidden magic in the world. To understand how humans work.
As Leonard Cohen so poignantly wrote: “Somebody Said Lift That Veil.” Well, that someone is us.
launched Esoterica Magazine at the end of the pandemic, to embrace creativity and the open flow of ideas in a post-pandemic world. She worried about the attack on truth and journalists, and on the arts and artists. Leah wanted a space for contributors and readers who struggle to quiet their brains, who read stories and then ruminate on them for weeks, much to the chagrin of their lovers, partners, and co-workers. Little did she know in 2022 that the pandemic was the least of our worries.
What are we looking for? Well written stories, both fiction and nonfiction. They should reveal something unknown, however you interpret it. They should give us insight into the way the world works. Into the way people works. Into ourselves. We aim to publish stories and essays under 2500 words but there is wiggle room. No story is too short.
What do we offer? We like to work with our writers. We give them advice and guidance.
